Description and Objectives

This course entails an introduction to informal (introductory) logic.

Therefore, the course explores the concept of argument validity and systems of validity. The objective of the course is to provide students with logical literacy, that is, knowledge of basic concepts and applications of logic: validity/invalidity, good/bad reasoning, and related distinctions. At the end of the course students will be able to distinguish/analyze valid and invalid arguments, distinguish/analyze formal and informal fallacies, distinguish/analyze validity between classes and validity between propositions.

LRC Technology Orientation

Students are required to attend an orientation in the use of the LRC before receiving their academic degree. See Jim Morris, LRC director for scheduling.

Grading

An exam follows each of the four units specified on the Course Outline. Course grade is based on average obtained through the four unit exams. Exams may be taken on-line or sent to students via E-Mail. Contract grading will be employed. The nature of the contract will be explained shortly.

Students will be required to write 3500 words per Gordon Rule status of the course. Writing requirement is defined within Course Outline.

A grade of C or higher is necessary to pass Phi 1100.

Academic Honesty

Cheating, plagiarism, bribery, misrepresentation, and fabrication are not permitted--surprise!--and will be dealt with severely. Students should be aware of the student code of conduct found in the Student Handbook.

Reasonable Accommodations

Lake City Community College seeks to provide reasonable accommodations for all qualified individuals with disabilities. This College will adhere to all applicable federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and guidelines with respect to providing reasonable accommodations as required to afford equal educational opportunity. It is the student’s responsibility to register with the Office of Disabled Student Services, at 754-4393 and to contact the faculty member in a timely manner to arrange for appropriate accommodations.
