TThe tools used in these courses are donated by the industry, which then the department receives $300,000-$400,000 worth of new equipment each year
Mr. King recruits 12 to 15 students per year for this program and only 10 to 12 graduate. You could either go for a one year certificate or go for a two year Associate degree. The students start working for a paycheck on day one. They get to work with irrigation contractors and landscape companies that have irrigation divisions, irrigation parts distributors and golf courses with starting salaries of $22,000-$40,000 a year with great career potential from just a one year program.
The students are trained in
design, installation, and troubleshooting irrigation systems. The teachers give
the students real world, hands-on experience for students by doing projects for
the city, county, and the K-12 grade schools such as the Southside Baseball
Complex, Eastside Elementary School, Girls Softball Association, and the Melrose
Park Elementary School just to name a few.
Aside from all the work, they have an annual hog roast in December which they use the money for the program. They also have an annual golf tournament as well. They also have the Student Career Days in Columbus, Ohio in March. The program also offers tours of their classrooms and summer internships.
After graduating for the irrigation management program, many students got jobs as golf-court superintendents, landscape specialists, turf equipment managers, foresters, and irrigation managers.
